Daylight Saving Time will officially end in Europe on Sunday, October 27. Clocks will be set back one hour from 3:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., marking a return to standard time. As Europe switches back to standard time, the debate over whether this practice is helpful or harmful will likely restart, especially since the EU has yet to decide.

The European Commission first proposed ending seasonal clock changes in 2018, a proposal that the European Parliament approved in early 2019. However, the final decision rests with the EU Council, representing the member states, where a majority vote would be required to abolish the twice-yearly time change across the EU.

So far, there has been little movement toward an agreement, with the current Hungarian EU Council Presidency and the European Commission passing responsibility back and forth when questioned about the delay by the Austrian Press Agency (APA).

Until the EU’s member states reach a consensus, Europe will continue adjusting its clocks twice each year, leaving the issue unresolved for the foreseeable future.
