An elderly couple in Vienna’s 13th district, Hietzing, have been cheated out of more than €250,000 by fraudsters posing as police officers, Vienna police announced on Friday.

The perpetrators convinced the couple, both aged 83, to hand over the money as an alleged deposit for their daughter-in-law.

The fraudsters initially contacted the couple by telephone, claiming that their daughter-in-law had been involved in a serious car accident. To avoid her facing a prison sentence, they said, a payment of €40,000 would be required as bail.

A fake police officer later arrived at the couple’s residence to collect €17,500 in cash, along with gold bars valued at around €250,000.

In response to the incident, Vienna police issued a press release urging the public to hang up immediately if a caller asks for money, valuables, or bank details. “Do not disclose any information about your assets or personal details over the phone,” the police warned.
