After a fire broke out in an apartment in Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus on Saturday evening, a father bravely jumped out of the first-floor window to save himself and his family. The 32-year-old sustained injuries, including a laceration and ankle injuries, according to Corinna Had, spokesperson for the Vienna Professional Rescue Service. However, he managed to help his wife and three children stay safe.
The Vienna Fire Department was called to the scene on Märzstraße shortly after 6:00 PM. A fire had broken out in the hallway of the apartment, blocking the escape route via the staircase. In this situation, the father decided to rescue himself and his family through a window facing the inner courtyard. He jumped about four meters to the ground and then helped the others, who reached safety with minimal injury. The 32-year-old was treated on-site by the rescue team, which had 13 units, and was later transported to the hospital.
Large-Scale Firefighter Response
The Vienna Professional Fire Department, which dispatched seven vehicles and 28 personnel, launched a firefighting operation with respiratory protection. As the apartment door had already burned through, smoke had spread into the staircase. The fire was quickly brought under control. For safety reasons, the entire staircase had to be evacuated, and all adjacent apartments were checked. Once the necessary measures to ventilate all affected areas were completed, residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
After the flames were contained, any remaining embers in the affected apartment were extinguished using a hand pump. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the investigation will be conducted by the Vienna State Criminal Police Department.
