American filmmaker Wes Anderson, known for films such as The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Darjeeling Limited, recently traveled on the ÖBB Nightjet and discussed his affinity for train travel and design, according to ÖBB.
Anderson, acclaimed for his distinctive visual style and nostalgic tone, has frequently featured trains in his work, most notably in the 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited, where the narrative centers on a rail journey through India.
Last year, Anderson was photographed on board a Nightjet service from Berlin to Zurich with actor Bill Murray. This year, he has already taken a Nightjet from Munich to Rome. Before departure, he spoke about the appeal of night trains and the atmosphere they offer on long journeys.
“For me, boarding a train is like entering a moving house,” Anderson said. “The place travels with the story, giving it a particular sense of mystery — especially when you are leaving home and not returning right away.”
Anderson praised the design of the new-generation Nightjet sleeper compartments, noting their dual functionality for day and night use. He highlighted features such as integrated ladders and adjustable lighting that enhance passenger comfort.
ÖBB’s Nightjet brand refers to the Austrian Federal Railways’ overnight passenger train services, which operate across several European countries with sleeper, couchette and seated carriages.
