A major search operation took place on Sunday at Vienna’s popular outdoor pool Gänsehäufel after a caller claimed a young woman had drowned.
The alert was raised around 4 p.m., prompting a large-scale emergency response. According to the caller, a 20-year-old woman had gone under and not resurfaced. The police confirmed that an incident had been reported, and numerous emergency crews rushed to the scene. “The fire department, the rescue team, the police, a helicopter, and two ambulance services are all here,” one eyewitness told The International. Divers searched the area extensively—but found no trace of the woman.
“At this point, it’s unclear whether this was a false alarm,” said police spokesperson Anna Gutt.
After more than an hour, the search was called off. “We now believe no one actually drowned. The witness gave conflicting statements,” authorities said. The woman who made the emergency call, who speaks limited German, later admitted she wasn’t certain if she had actually seen someone go under.
Separate Incident Confirmed: 28-Year-Old Man Rescued
In a separate event on the same day at Gänsehäufel, a 28-year-old man did go under, according to police. He was rescued and airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
