Record-breaking rainfall partially flooded northern Vienna on Saturday afternoon, resulting in several injuries and causing train cancellations and flight delays.

A 35-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after being swept under a bus by the force of the water in Vienna’s 19th district, Döbling. The fire brigade had to lift the bus to free her. She was treated by paramedics before being transported to hospital in critical condition. Nearby, a driver was rescued from a car trapped in a flooded underpass.

According to ORF, 110 litres of rain per square metre fell in the area, marking the highest summer figure in the 152-year history of recorded measurements. The all-time record remains at 139 litres, set in May 1885.

The storm also brought traffic at Vienna Airport to a temporary standstill. The airport’s departure and arrival boards displayed delays of several hours well into the evening. According to the specialised site Flightradar24.com, 39 flights were delayed by an average of 70 minutes, and one flight was cancelled.

ORF further reported that the S45 S-Bahn line, which runs through north-western Vienna, was interrupted between Hernals and Heiligenstadt due to flooded tracks. Additionally, trains were unable to reach Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof in Vienna’s 9th district, a key station for connections to the northern suburbs, due to a signal box failure. Moreover, two tram lines were disrupted after a branch fell onto the overhead wires.

In total, there were 220 weather-related deployments by the fire brigade since 4 p.m.
