As in previous years, the federal police will be increasingly present and visible during Advent on shopping streets, Christmas markets, and other festive events. The focus of law enforcement will be on property crime and preventing extremist threats, the Ministry of the Interior announced on Saturday.
“The police will intensify foot patrols and also deploy special forces and plainclothes officers. The goal is clear: a safe Advent season for all Austrians,” emphasized Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). For this reason, units equipped with appropriate weaponry will also be visible.
Currently, there are no specific indications of threats related to Christmas markets or events in Austria. However, the Ministry of the Interior continues to prioritize counter-terrorism measures, given the elevated threat level that has been in effect since October 2023. The Directorate for State Security and Intelligence is closely monitoring developments in Islamist extremism and terrorism and their impact on domestic security.
Large crowds also attract pickpockets and con artists who exploit distractions, such as spilling drinks or showing cards and flyers, to take advantage of inattentive victims. Therefore, the police recommend carrying valuables close to the body (in secured inner pockets), keeping bags and backpacks closed, and carrying them in front of the body. A healthy sense of caution is advised if approached, distracted, or bumped unexpectedly by strangers. Additionally, people should only carry as much cash as necessary.
