Vienna’s Jewish Museum has launched a week of reflection in honour of Holocaust Remembrance Day, with a new installation titled News from Auschwitz.

The installation brings the reflections and thoughts of visitors from the Austrian exhibition at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial into a display in the museum’s shop window.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liberated by Soviet troops from the Nazis on 27 January 1945. Ceremonies are taking place at the site to mark the 80th anniversary, attended by survivors of the camp and world leaders.

January 27 was designated Holocaust Memorial Day by the United Nations in 2005.

Some six million Jewish men, women and children were murdered by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War Two.

Barbara Staudinger, Director of the Jewish Museum Vienna, highlighted the installation’s importance, saying it “makes it tangible how closely Auschwitz and Austria are still connected in memory today.”

The installation opens a week of commemoration and discussions, including at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the museum itself, to reflect on the ongoing relevance of the Holocaust in contemporary life.

According to a recent survey by the NGO Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference), one in seven young adults in Austria has not heard of the Holocaust.
