Austrian residents are set to receive their climate bonus, or Klimabonus, starting from 2 September, the Climate Ministry has announced.

The payments, which will continue through until spring 2025, are automatic and require no application.

Anyone who has had their primary residence in Austria for at least six months is eligible for the bonus, which was introduced in 2022 as a means to offset a new carbon tax implemented that same year.

This year’s basic amount is €145. Depending on one’s location, payment levels vary between €145, €195, €245 and €290.

The bonus will be deposited directly into recipients’ bank accounts if their details are registered with the Finazonline government portal. Otherwise, it will be delivered by post as a voucher.

The Climate Ministry reports that over 90% of recipients are already receiving their bonus directly into their bank accounts. This year, around 2.1 million bank transfers are scheduled each day, a significant increase from the 300,000 daily transactions during the scheme’s first year.

Postal deliveries will commence in the first week of September. The number of vouchers sent by post has been reduced by approximately one-third since the scheme’s inception, equating to savings of around 400,000 letters, according to the ministry.
