Vienna has slipped from the top spot in the world’s most livable cities ranking for the first time in several years. After three consecutive years at number one, the Austrian capital has been overtaken by Copenhagen. Vienna now ties with Zurich, while Melbourne and Geneva follow in the Economist Group’s Global Liveability Index.

In the 2025 Global Liveability Index—compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)—the next spots go to Sydney, Osaka, Auckland, Adelaide, and Vancouver.

Copenhagen achieved a perfect score of 100 in stability, education, and infrastructure, moving up from second place. The EIU assesses 173 cities worldwide across 30 indicators, including healthcare, culture, and environment. Kyiv ranks 165th, and the bottom five are Damascus, Tripoli, Dhaka, Karachi, and Algiers.
