A masked gunman has robbed a bank in the Stubai Valley in Tyrol on Tuesday morning, police have confirmed.

The man entered the bank in Mieders just before 11am, demanding cash in German, reportedly speaking with a foreign accent. He then made his escape across nearby fields, heading north.

Photos released suggest that the targeted bank was a branch of Raiffeisenbank, though it remains unclear how much money was stolen.

At the time of the robbery, there were three staff members in the branch, but no customers, according to Larissa Gossner, deputy head of the state criminal investigation office (LKA). A search operation involving a police helicopter and the Cobra special forces unit has so far proven unsuccessful.

Roadblocks and checkpoints have been established, including along the nearby Brenner Motorway (A13).

Police have released a description of the suspect, who is thought to be between 30 and 40 years old, around 170 to 175 cm tall, and of average build. He was last seen wearing a blue hoodie, dark grey trousers, a black FFP2 mask and disposable gloves. The man was armed with a handgun.

The state criminal investigation office has appealed for anyone with information to come forward, providing the number 05913/70-3333.

In recent months, a series of bank robberies has hit Tyrol, leading to several arrests.

Just last week, a 68-year-old Austrian man was apprehended following a bank robbery in the Innsbruck district of Reichenau in late July. In a separate incident earlier in July, two men – a 24-year-old Austrian and a 32-year-old Russian – were arrested and are currently in custody. There have also been robberies in Innsbruck’s Olympic Village and in Kufstein, in the Lower Tyrol region.
