Nearly 85% of electricity in Austria during 2023 came from renewable sources, the country’s energy regulator, E-Control, reported on Monday.
“The figure rose from 82.93% last year to 84.73%,” said E-Control Board Member Alfons Haber. According to the newly published electricity and gas report, the share of fossil fuels stood at 15.22%.
The 84.73% derived from renewables comprised 61.65% hydropower, 12.15% wind energy, and 10.93% solar energy, biomass, and other renewables. “No nuclear energy certificates were used in the current period,” quoted Haber from the report.
Approximately 68% of the energy used was sourced from within Austria, while Norway led the list of imports, accounting for nearly 11%. Electricity suppliers, as well as gas providers, must now disclose the origin of the power.
