The City of Vienna has introduced a new service point to address conflicts in the bustling public space of Yppenplatz in the 16th district.
Known as the Grätzlerei, the initiative aims to foster communication between residents, business owners and visitors.
Once a quiet square, Yppenplatz has undergone significant changes in recent years, driven by urban development and a rise in cafes and restaurants. These transformations have brought local shops, market stalls and a small recreational space to the area. However, with the increase in foot traffic, tensions have started to rise within the neighbourhood.
The service point will be housed in a Grätzl office, open every Tuesday from 10:00 to 12:00 for private consultations. Additionally, an open discussion group will be held every Wednesday from 16:00 to 18:00, offering a forum for all to participate.
The initiative is part of a wider package of measures designed to enhance safety and well-being in Vienna’s public spaces. “The City of Vienna is implementing various measures to increase safety in public spaces. Our package complements the work of the police and is designed to provide relief at high-traffic locations, improving the sense of safety and well-being for all users,” Social Affairs Councillor Peter Hacker said in a press release.
