The initial exploratory talks between Austria’s ÖVP (People’s Party) and SPÖ (Social Democrats) concluded without a clear indication of whether a coalition could be formed. Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the ÖVP described the road ahead as “long and likely rocky.” In contrast, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler expressed optimism, praising the positive tone of the first discussions.

In a press conference following the 4.5-hour meeting, Nehammer described the talks as “professional and respectful.” He noted that significant differences exist between the two parties, particularly on key issues like economic stability and immigration. Emphasizing a need for reform, Nehammer stated, “Austria needs change, and we are committed to it.”

Babler echoed similar sentiments, stating, “We do not want to continue as before, nor go back to the past.” His message highlighted the SPÖ’s goal of forming a government focusing on practical solutions rather than internal conflict. Babler reflected positively on the first meeting, indicating, “I am optimistic that these negotiations could lead to a government.” However, he clarified that this initial session primarily focused on establishing a cooperative atmosphere, with no concrete outcomes yet.

Beate Meinl-Reisinger, leader of the NEOS, Austria’s liberal party, also met with Nehammer, spending almost two hours in a “very trusting” conversation. She commented that ÖVP and SPÖ must first assess their potential coalition path before considering broader partnerships. Meinl-Reisinger added that any possible coalition with the NEOS would require full inclusion in the talks. The NEOS, along with the Greens, led by Werner Kogler, remain open to potential government participation should an agreement be reached with either party.

The talks, held at the Palais Epstein near the Austrian Parliament, are expected to resume in larger sessions after the autumn holidays. The outcome remains uncertain, but the willingness to pursue a constructive path forward has laid the groundwork for further discussions.
