Austrian Railways (ÖBB) has announced plans to recruit around 2,500 new staff across eastern Austria this year, including in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland.
The hiring drive is part of the national railway operator’s long-term strategy to take on 4,100 new employees each year until 2030.
ÖBB’s HR director, Martina Hacker, said the company offered “a wide range of career opportunities with over 130 job roles, making working with us particularly attractive – and that across all of Austria.”
Jobs and Training Opportunities
Many of the vacancies are in core railway roles, such as train drivers, conductors and shunters. However, ÖBB is also looking to recruit Postbus drivers, technicians and IT specialists to support its digital transformation and future rail operations.
The company runs its own training programmes, with nearly 800 places available each year. In the east of the country, courses are on offer for aspiring train drivers, conductors, shunters, signal controllers, wagon inspectors and travel advisors.
ÖBB has highlighted that these training schemes come with a salary, making them particularly appealing to career changers. In addition, around 340 apprenticeships will be available in the eastern region for the next training year.
Incentives for New Recruits
Some roles come with financial incentives. Trainee shunters and signal controllers will receive a €2,500 bonus after their probationary month, while shunters will be awarded a further €2,500 once they pass the shunting supervisor exam. Signal controllers will receive their second bonus later in their training.
