Austrian Railways (ÖBB) has announced that services on the Vienna-Linz and Vienna-Salzburg routes, which were affected by flooding and mudslides following the weekend’s storms, resumed on Wednesday morning.
“The efforts of the past few days have made it possible for the ‘old’ Western line to be operational on a single track from tomorrow,” ÖBB said in a press release late on Tuesday.
The Vienna-Graz line has been operational since Tuesday.
Two long-distance trains will run between Vienna and Salzburg every hour, as confirmed by Westbahn in a separate statement. In addition, there will be a reduced local service between Vienna Westbahnhof and St. Pölten.
Local trains between Amstetten and St. Valentin are also set to resume on Wednesday. ÖBB said it will only be able to give an estimate of when the entire Western line will be fully operational after a full damage assessment.
Meanwhile, the Franz-Josefs line is fully operational from Wednesday morning. On the Eastern line, train services between Vienna and Budapest, as well as local services, are also set to resume.
However, ÖBB warned of possible “short-term delays” on the Northern line. The section between Angern and Bernhardsthal is at risk due to rising water levels on the River March, and the situation is being closely watched in case a dam is opened in the Czech Republic.
