From January, people across Austria hoping to quit smoking will be able to access free support, as the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) introduces nicotine cessation courses nationwide.
Around a quarter of the Austrian population are daily smokers, according to Statistik Austria.
The six-week programmes, available online or in person, aim to help participants break their addiction to cigarettes, vapes and other tobacco or nicotine products. For the first time, these courses will be completely free for insured individuals starting in 2025.
Expert Support and Special Sessions
Led by clinical and health psychologists, the sessions include group discussions, personal assessments and practical tips tailored to each participant. Special online lectures for pregnant women will also be offered. These can be attended anonymously, with no requirement to turn on a camera.
How to Get Involved
Anyone interested in joining the courses must register in advance. Further details about the programmes are available on the website rauchfrei.at.
