Over 100 Firefighters Battle Major Warehouse Fire

More than 100 firefighters were deployed overnight from Thursday to Friday to tackle a major blaze at a warehouse in the town of Wolfsberg, in Austria’s southern province of Carinthia.

“The Lebek warehouse is fully ablaze and has been completely destroyed,” Wolfsberg mayor Hannes Primus confirmed. According to reports, several nearby houses had to be evacuated, with flames visible from kilometres away. The cause of the fire remains unclear.

The 8,000 square metre warehouse was home to several businesses, along with a children’s trampoline park, which had been due to open on Friday. Wolfsberg city council also said the building housed storage rooms for portable voting booths. “Thanks to alternative solutions at the polling station (such as smaller partitions and screens), a regular voting process for the National Council elections this Sunday is guaranteed,” officials emphasised, adding that voter privacy would be maintained.

As of midday on Friday, firefighting efforts were still ongoing and expected to continue for some time, according to the fire brigade. A total of twelve fire departments, with 26 vehicles, were involved in the operation.
