Vienna police have reported around 450 road offences following a joint operation with city authorities over the weekend, aimed at tackling youth crime and illegal racing.
During the operation, which ran from Saturday night to Sunday morning, six driving licences were confiscated for speeding violations, while another five were seized for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Additionally, a forged driving licence was recovered.
The City of Vienna’s operations team also took eight licence plates, issued 49 reports for technical problems, and carried out nine noise tests. They also seized two vehicles, make 131 checks for unpaid taxes and inspected 17 food establishments.
The police operation also concentrated on juvenile delinquency and offences committed by foreign nationals. This led to around 200 identity checks by immigration officers, four arrests under the Aliens Police Act, one administrative arrest, and the seizure of narcotics on five occasions.
Last week, Austrian safety authorities announced that new regulations permitting the confiscation of vehicles from speeding drivers had resulted in a 50% reduction in road fatalities related to speeding.
