A 54-year-old disabled man from the Gmunden district in Upper Austria has been charged after police uncovered a significant stockpile of weapons, following a tip-off from his 38-year-old carer.
The haul included 26 long guns, a machine gun and five antique handguns. Officers also found 12 sticks of gelignite, a grenade, two tank shells, several ammunition magazines and thousands of rounds of live ammunition.
The discovery was made last Thursday after the woman reported the man to police in Bad Goisern.
She told officers the man had threatened to kill her and was keeping firearms unsecured in his home. Acting on her information, police carried out a voluntary search of the property, where they uncovered the extensive arsenal.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the man’s possession of the items was lawful. All the weapons and explosives have been seized. The tank shells were destroyed on the orders of the Wels public prosecutor’s office.
The 54-year-old has admitted to making the threats and has been charged.
