Platforms like Willhaben, eBay and Vinted have seen a spike in activity, with listings rising by 30 to 40% as people in Austria resell unwanted Christmas gifts.

According to Gerlinde Giesinger, spokesperson for Willhaben, the weeks after New Year are the busiest. “The heightened activity might be down to our users wanting to rehome presents that don’t quite suit them, giving them to someone who’ll enjoy them more,” she said.

Nearly half of the items listed are described as being in near-new condition. Popular items include books, films, toys and tech gadgets like gaming consoles. “Games consoles are particularly popular, both as second-hand Christmas gifts and later in resale,” Giesinger added.

Financial Reasons and Sustainability Concerns

A recent Willhaben survey revealed that 35% of respondents found it perfectly acceptable to resell Christmas presents. The vast majority (90%) would also be happy to receive a “used gift.” This trend is not only driven by financial reasons, such as inflation and rising costs (65.7%), but also by a growing sense of sustainability, with more than half of all respondents planning to opt for second-hand items this year.
