The annual Vienna Ice Dream skating rink opened on Thursday at Rathausplatz, in front of City Hall, marking its 30th year.
Open daily from 10am to 10pm, the much-loved attraction runs from 23 January to 2 March, featuring a surface of over 10,000 square metres, making it one of the largest open-air artificial ice rinks in the world.
Since its modest start in 1996, when the rink was no larger than an ice hockey pitch, the Vienna Ice Dream has grown into a major draw for visitors. This year’s event, put together by a team of 300 workers after the Christmas market cleared the square, is said to be bigger than ever.
One highlight is the “Sky Rink,” an elevated ice terrace introduced in 2019. Now expanded to 1,300 square metres, the terrace can be accessed via a 150-metre ramp or a new staircase, making it easier for non-skaters to join the fun.
Improved Access for All
A new entrance at the Lichtenfelsgasse-Rathausplatz junction has been added, making it more convenient for those arriving from the reopened Rathaus U2 station or the future U2/U5 interchange. Accessibility has also been improved, with a ramp and lift ensuring the upper dining areas can accommodate visitors with limited mobility.
Fun for Everyone
Families will appreciate the 140-square-metre children’s rink in the western part of Rathauspark, where free skating lessons are available for young beginners. For adult beginners, there’s a 550-square-metre practice rink open during the day. After 5pm, this area transforms into a curling zone, complete with eight lanes that can be booked online.
Despite the upgrades, ticket prices remain unchanged. Adults can skate for €9 online or €10 at the box office, with equipment hire available on-site. To keep things affordable, children and school or kindergarten groups can skate for free on weekdays until 4pm.
