The 2024 “Pass Egal” National Council Election has concluded with an unprecedented level of participation, marking the largest turnout in the history of the event. Nearly 20,000 people cast their votes, with over 70 schools joining forces with SOS Mitmensch to host their own versions of the “Pass Egal” elections. The event, which allows individuals without Austrian citizenship to symbolically participate in national elections, saw an increase in engagement from across the country.
Among those without Austrian citizenship, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) emerged as the top choice, securing 36.8% of the votes. The Greens followed with 19.3%, and the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) took third place with 10.4%. Other results included the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) at 8.1%, NEOS at 7.9%, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) at 6.4%, “None” at 3.2%, the Beer Party (BIER) at 2.9%, and LMP with 0.7%.
It is important to note that the “Pass Egal” election is not representative of all individuals without Austrian citizenship. The results reflect the political preferences of those who were aware of the democracy initiative and chose to participate in this symbolic vote for a more inclusive democracy.
The organizers expressed their gratitude to the thousands of engaged individuals and organizations that helped make this year’s election a success. Participation spanned all federal states and included many towns, neighborhoods, and communities.
“This election shows the power of democratic participation, even for those who may not have formal voting rights,” organizers stated. “Together, we have sent a strong message against division and the growing democratic gap in our society.”
The “Pass Egal” election continues to push for greater inclusivity in Austria’s democratic processes, aiming to bridge the divide for those living in the country but without voting rights due to citizenship restrictions.
