The Social Democrats (SPÖ) have secured the most votes in Vienna in a parliamentary election won by the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), marking the biggest upset to Austria’s establishment in decades.

Preliminary results show the SPÖ winning 29.8% of the vote in the Austrian capital, significantly ahead of their national performance (21%).

The FPÖ reclaimed second place in Vienna, a position they had lost to the People’s Party (ÖVP) in 2017, with 20.6%. Meanwhile, the Greens, who hit a record high of over 20% in 2019, slipped back to 12.4%.

NEOS, a coalition partner in Vienna’s SPÖ-led city government, fared better in the capital than across Austria, securing 11.4%.

The SPÖ made notable gains in former Green strongholds, increasing their share by more than 10% in the 7th district (Neubau), compared to the previous parliamentary elections in 2019.

The FPÖ struggled in these urban districts, maintaining their strength in the more rural areas, where the SPÖ saw slight losses. FPÖ even topped the polls in the 21st district (Floridsdorf), the home district of Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ).

While the Greens are no longer the dominant party in any district, the ÖVP held onto its traditional strongholds, including the first district (Innere Stadt), the 19th (Döbling), and the 13th (Hietzing). NEOS also saw gains across all districts, achieving its best result in the city centre, with 18.9% of the vote.

Nearly 1.13 million people were eligible to vote in Vienna. You can see how Vienna’s districts voted here.
