Parts of Vienna’s U6 U-Bahn line remain blocked on Tuesday after a track cleaning vehicle overturned overnight, causing significant disruptions during the morning rush hour.

According to Wiener Linien, the city’s transit authority, the incident occurred around 2:00 am between the U6 Josefstädter Straße and Thaliastraße stations, when the rail vehicle toppled over, rendering the track impassable in that area. There were no injuries reported.

Cleanup operations, involving the Vienna Fire Department, are currently underway.

A replacement rail service has been implemented between the U6 Westbahnhof and Michelbeuern/AKH stations.

The 20-tonne track bed vacuum cleaner, used for removing gravel beneath the tracks, is believed to have overturned due to the weight of its suction arm.

Despite establishing the replacement service, Wiener Linien has advised commuters to avoid the affected area. Parts of the vacuum cleaner extended onto the adjacent lane of the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, necessitating a temporary closure for recovery efforts.

It remains unclear whether the track itself sustained any damage.
