The SPÖ and FPÖ remain, according to their own figures, just below the legal campaign‑spending cap of €5 million in the lead‑up to the Vienna municipal council election on 27 April. The SPÖ reports expenditures of just under €4.9 million; the FPÖ, more than €4.7 million. These figures come from the parties’ campaign‑finance reports. The ÖVP has disclosed costs of €3.7 million, the Greens €3.5 million, NEOS €2.8 million and the KPÖ €600,000.
During the last legislative period, at the behest of the SPÖ and NEOS, the spending cap was reduced from €6 million to €5 million per party. Mandatory campaign‑finance reports were also introduced. One week before election day a first report is due—in other words, today, Sunday. It must disclose both expenses incurred up to now and those expected through election day, and must be filed with the Vienna Court of Audit. Failure to report carries a fine of up to €50,000. As of yet, no report has appeared on the Team HC Strache website.
