Over 220 lost cats have been found on the streets of Vienna since the summer holidays began, city officials have announced.
The Animal Rescue Vienna team has been operating at full capacity, rescuing up to 20 animals per day, a significant increase from the annual average of eight.
Many of the rescued cats were found with serious injuries, often from falling out of windows or being struck by vehicles. Tragically, some were abandoned, often under distressing circumstances.
In one case, a passer-by discovered a pair of Scottish Fold cats in a cardboard box, alongside two kittens that were only a few minutes old. The animal rescue team swiftly brought the small family to TierQuarTier Wien, but unfortunately the mother cat did not accept her newborns. Sadly, one of the two kittens did not survive.
Another distressing incident involved a cat named ‘Sky’. The approximately eight-year-old feline was cruelly abandoned in the sweltering summer heat, found inside a taped-up transport box near a bathing pond in Vienna’s 22nd district.
