A 27-year-old woman was found dead on Saturday in her apartment in Vienna-Margareten. Neighbors had alerted the police because they detected a strong odor of decomposition. At around 1:30 PM, the professional fire brigade forced the door open, and responders discovered the body inside.
“Based on the discovery circumstances and the preliminary forensic report, foul play cannot currently be ruled out,” Anna Gutt, spokesperson for the State Police Directorate, told APA. The State Criminal Police Office is “investigating at full speed in all directions.”
The woman—who was unemployed and registered as seeking work—was the only person registered at the address on Zentagasse. Police say she likely lay dead in the apartment for at least several days before being discovered. Determining the exact time of death is up to the medical examiner, who must consider that the recent high temperatures probably accelerated decomposition.
Over the weekend, investigators interviewed relatives and neighbors. It remains unclear when the woman was last seen alive. The police have not released details of any injuries or traces in the apartment. “It is not yet confirmed whether a homicide occurred,” the spokesperson said.
On early Sunday afternoon, police investigators were still at the scene conducting inquiries, an APA reporter observed.
