Vienna’s tram line 49 will be out of service until mid-April as major track replacement works begin on Hütteldorfer Straße, transport operator Wiener Linien has announced.

A total of 1,800 metres of track will be replaced this year, with the first phase of work starting on Monday at the Johnstraße junction. As part of the project, Wiener Linien will also upgrade the Johnstraße and Breitensee stops to make it easier for passengers to change between lines.

Replacement Services in Place

During the disruption, tram lines 46 and 52 will cover most of line 49’s route.

Tram line 46 will extend beyond Joachimsthalerplatz to Hütteldorfer Straße, from where it will follow line 49’s route to Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse.

Meanwhile, tram line 52 will run from Westbahnhof to Urban-Loritz-Platz before continuing along line 49’s usual route to Ring, Volkstheater. Passengers can also use the U3 U-Bahn line between Hütteldorfer Straße and Gürtel as an alternative.

In the second phase of the project, from April to June, construction will shift to the Breitensee area, between Leyserstraße and Matzingerstraße. During this period, line 52 will cover parts of line 49’s route.
