The number of parcel boxes in Vienna has increased by 55% since last year, according to trade officials.
The Vienna Chamber of Commerce reported that there are currently 1,069 parcel boxes in the city, featuring a total of 77,272 compartments. In 2023, there were only 688 locations.
Approximately 500,000 parcels are delivered in Vienna every working day.
“Thanks to these boxes, parcels can be delivered at any time,” Davor Sertic, chairman of the chamber’s transport and traffic division, stated in a press release. “If a parcel box is situated in front of large residential buildings, delivery workers can deliver all the parcels for that address at once, instead of going from door to door or returning to their vehicle to pick up more parcels.”
Vienna has ten parcel box operators, but only two of these – Austrian Post and Amazon – utilise these boxes for their deliveries. The other eight operators (Easy Paketstation, MyFlexBox, Renz, Rosy’s, Storebox, TableConnect, Tamburi, and Variocube) employ different systems, requiring users to register separately for each.
The Chamber of Commerce advocates for a unified registration platform for all suppliers. “This will massively increase the attractiveness of the parcel boxes and their usage, as the volume of parcels is expected to continue rising in the coming years,” said Sertic.
