A digital map detailing all underground cables and pipes in Vienna was viewed 22 million times last year, the energy company Wiener Netze has revealed in a press release.
The map, accessible upon request here, depicts Wiener Netze’s extensive network spanning 29,500 kilometres of electricity, gas, district heating and fibre optic cables.
“Wiener Netze’s Geographical Information System, or GIS for short, is essentially a digital city map for the underground,” said Ilse Hirt, the company’s managing director. “This map displays all of the network’s operational resources, including cables and pipes, 90% of which are laid underground. It’s simply too much data to fit on a paper map, which is why we rely on this digital twin.”
Around 3,000 users have so far had access to the GIS.
“This enormous wealth of data is invaluable, playing a crucial role both in ensuring security of supply and in planning for the energy transition,” explained Vienna’s Finance City Councillor, Peter Hanke, in the press release.
All underground construction projects – whether for a car park or the U-Bahn – are reliant on this data.
Wiener Netze is Austria’s largest network operator, supplying over 2 million customers in Vienna, as well as parts of Lower Austria and Burgenland, with electricity, gas, district heating and telecommunications.
