The average annual gross salary in Austria is €49,121, but there are sharp regional differences, according to new figures from employer review platform Kununu. The study, which analysed 181,000 salary records of full-time employees from 2023 and 2024, also shows that Burgenland has the lowest average salary at €45,019.
However, workers in the region of Vienna and Vorarlberg enjoy the highest average pay, earning €51,127 and €51,094 respectively.
Among Austria’s ten largest cities, Linz leads the way with an average salary of €51,278, followed by Vienna, Dornbirn, Graz and Wels. St. Pölten, Salzburg and Villach sit in the middle of the pack, while Innsbruck and Klagenfurt have the lowest salaries in this group.
Gender Pay Gap Remains
The data also highlights a stubborn gender pay gap. Women earn an average of €43,599 per year – €8,839 less than men, whose average salary is €52,438. The gap widens further in managerial roles, where women are paid 24% less than their male counterparts. Managers as a whole earn an average of €58,818 annually.
“Our figures show that wage equality is still lacking in the Austrian labour market. This applies to both the gender comparison and regional disparities. A key reason for this is the continued lack of salary transparency, which would provide employees with far greater clarity,” said Kununu CEO Nina Zimmermann in a statement on Monday.
High Earners and Leading Industries
There are big differences between professions and industries as well. Professors top the list with an average annual salary of €90,027, followed by Business Unit Managers (€84,439) and doctors (€84,352). Other well-paid roles include software architects, private bankers and tax advisors.
