Travel traffic southbound in the state of Salzburg completely collapsed on Whit Saturday. In front of the tunnel construction site at Golling on the Tauern Motorway (A10), the backup, according to an APA on-scene report, extended around 30 kilometers back to the Salzburg interchange at about 7:00 a.m. Massive delays also occurred on the alternate route via the Salzachtal federal road. The ÖAMTC reported heavy traffic volume from Tyrol and Styria as well.
By around 8:30 a.m., ORF Radio Salzburg reported that the jam on the A10 stretched beyond Walserberg into Bavaria up to Neukirchen—about 40 kilometers with a waiting time of four and a half hours.
The travel wave had already begun Friday afternoon, when the ÖAMTC noted continuous waits of over 90 minutes at the tunnel construction site. Congestion eased only slightly overnight. Early in the morning, the Hieflertunnel had to be closed due to a broken-down vehicle, worsening the situation further.
Overnight Stays on Supermarket Parking Lots
On the Salzachtal federal road, which runs parallel to the A10, traffic had already ground to a halt Friday afternoon. Many camper vans therefore headed for supermarket parking lots to catch some rest, ÖAMTC traffic advisor Herbert Thaler reported.
Traffic in Tyrol also stalled on Saturday along transit routes. The Fernpass route (B179), the Innsbruck area (A12/A13), and the Brenner Autobahn (A13) were particularly affected, with delays of around one hour between Innsbruck and the Brenner. The Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) also saw dense column traffic, though longer standstills did not materialize.
