Vienna authorities are aiming to install solar panels at as many municipal schools as possible by the end of next year.

Speaking at a press conference, City Councillor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr said that 46 Viennese schools already have solar panels, with ten more to be added this year.

“The ambition to install photovoltaic systems wherever it is technically feasible in Viennese educational buildings by 2025 underscores our commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2040,” Wiederkehr stated.

Vienna, like the rest of Austria, aims to become climate-neutral by 2040. On Tuesday, City Hall unveiled a draft of a city-wide climate protection law.

Since 2021, the amount of electricity generated from solar power in Vienna has more than tripled. In July, City Hall announced it had already met its 2024 target for expanding solar energy systems.
