After much of Europe has been sweltering, Austria is set for real heat next week. Experts at Geosphere Austria forecast up to 38 °C in eastern Austria next Thursday. No relief is in sight.
From Wednesday, a heat warning applies to Vienna, Burgenland, large parts of Lower and Upper Austria and Styria, central Carinthia, Tyrol’s lowlands, and Vorarlberg’s Rhine Valley. Vulnerable groups should expect elevated body temperature, rapid pulse, fatigue, headache, cramps, confusion, dizziness, consciousness disturbances, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
People should avoid direct sun and built-up or sealed areas, stay indoors during peak heat, and shift outdoor exertion to early morning or evening. Wear loose, light clothing and head coverings. Drink at least 2–3 L daily of water, unsweetened tea, or diluted juice; avoid alcohol.
Monday will be mostly clear and sunny, with some morning cumulus in the west and southwest, then afternoon showers and thunderstorms there. Elsewhere, few clouds and low rain chance, especially north and east. Light to moderate north winds. Lows 12–22 °C, highs 27–34 °C.
Tuesday brings morning clouds in the south, otherwise sun; western and southern regions see cumulus building into isolated showers and storms, north and east remain mostly sunny. Light to moderate north-east winds. Lows 12–20 °C; highs 27–34 °C.
Wednesday is widely sunny. Late afternoon, western mountains develop towering cumulus and some showers/storms; east and southeast stay hot and sunny. Light winds, moderate east to south in plains and mountains. Lows 13–21 °C; highs 29–36 °C.
Thursday starts sunny across Austria, then turns stifling in the east. Western mountains form large cumulus by noon and showers/storms—first in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg—spreading east and southeast by evening, while plains in the east, lower Carinthia, and southeast Styria likely stay dry. Southeast winds shift to west with storms, bringing strong gusts. Lows 15–23 °C; highs 30–38 °C, peaking in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland.
Friday remains very warm and increasingly humid and unstable nationwide. Western Austria may see overnight clouds and leftover storms; daytime sun returns, making it muggy to hot. Cumulus quickly develop into showers and storms across plains and southeast, some potentially severe. Elsewhere, light winds, moderate west in the Danube region and North Burgenland. Lows 16–26 °C; highs 24–36 °C from northwest to southeast.
