Due to ongoing drought and a high risk of forest fires, a grilling ban is now in effect at all public barbecue areas in Vienna. Smoking, grilling, and using open flames in forests and near forested areas are also prohibited, the City of Vienna announced on Monday. The ban also includes the use of shishas (water pipes), as the burning charcoal is considered an open fire source.
Forests and meadows in the federal capital are already extremely dry. “To protect people, animals, and nature, this ban is being enacted with immediate effect,” stated the Vienna Forestry and Agricultural Department. “It will remain in force until further notice and will only be lifted after prolonged rainfall.” Compliance will be monitored by the city’s foresters.
Call emergency number 122 in case of danger
“The current drought is creating an especially high risk of forest fires. We therefore urgently appeal to all Viennese to comply with the grilling and fire ban,” said Climate Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ). “If you notice a forest fire or smoke while out walking, please immediately alert the fire department by calling emergency number 122,” added Herbert Weidinger, deputy head of the city’s forestry and agriculture office.
Grilling in private gardens remains allowed, as long as the property lies outside of the designated danger zones. However, the City of Vienna also urges the utmost caution when handling fire in these areas.
