A new funding programme aims to help aspiring filmmakers produce and release their debut films more quickly, the Austrian Film Institute announced in a press release on Wednesday.

The programme, called Talent LAB, is a joint project between the institute and the Vienna Film Fund.

A total of €2.8 million will be made available in funding, €2.3 million of which will come from the federal government, with the remaining €500,000 provided by the City of Vienna via the Film Fund.

Total production costs must not exceed €1.2 million for feature films and €280,000 for documentary films. Both film directors and producers are eligible to apply. Projects must be completed within two years of funding approval and involve mandatory supervision.

“The new ‘Talent LAB’ offers up-and-coming talents not only financial resources, but also the necessary professional support and structure to realise their artistic ideas and visions,” said State Secretary for Culture Andrea Mayer (Green Party).

The submission deadline for the first Talent LAB round is 24 September.

According to the Austrian Film Institute, in 2022 – the most recent year with available statistics – 49 films were produced domestically in Austria, with 35 receiving an international release.
