Temperatures exceeding 30C are set to make a return to Austria this week as the summer’s final heatwave takes hold, according to meteorologists.

Weather forecaster wetter.at reports that warm air from south-west Europe will begin to flow into Austria on Tuesday, clearing away the current cloud cover. Temperatures are expected to range between 23C and 30C across the country, accompanied by moderate winds.

The heatwave is predicted to start on Wednesday, with most regions experiencing sunny conditions and temperatures climbing between 26°C and 32°C. However, there may be isolated showers or thunderstorms, particularly in the mountainous areas and in Upper and Lower Austria.

In a separate update, Vienna has set a new record for the number of tropical nights in a year, with 42, according to Der Standard. A tropical night is defined as one where temperatures do not drop below 20C. The previous record of 41 tropical nights was set in both 2018 and 2019.

This year is on track to be the hottest on record for Austria. According to Geosphere Austria, the average air temperature for the year has already been 3.8C above the annual average for the period 1961-1990.
