Spending on digital transactions within video games in Austria has surged by 771% since 2014, while the bicycle market has experienced a 415% increase over the same period, according to an annual consumer spending report.

Findings from the market research firm RegioData reveal that people in Austria are now spending 172% more on cosmetic surgery, 169% more on pets, and 113% more on tattoos than they did in 2014.

However, in absolute terms, spending in these categories remains comparatively low. On average, individuals currently spend €68 per person per year on cosmetic procedures, €61 on in-game purchases, and €159 on pets.

Spending on traditional consumer goods, such as shoes (+18%), clothing (+13%), technology (+9%), and furniture (+3%), has seen far less growth over the past decade.

By far, the largest proportion of money continues to be spent on housing (excluding heating costs), much as it was ten years ago.

According to the report, the average annual expenditure per resident is now €4,666, which is 46% higher than in 2014, while inflation during this period has risen by 33%.

The second-largest category of expenditure is transport (covering personal, public, and data transport), at €3,315 per person.

In third place are food expenses, with annual spending amounting to €3,144 per person. This figure has increased in line with inflation in recent years. On average, €1,396 is spent on household energy, a figure that has almost doubled in the last decade, significantly outpacing inflation.

Dining out also constitutes a substantial part of spending in Austria. On average, people in Austria spend €1,842 per year on eating out, a rise of 89% from a decade ago.

In total, the average Austrian resident now has €27,075 available per year, compared with €19,970 ten years ago. However, with inflation at 33% over this period, the real increase in purchasing power amounts to just 3%.
