Baby Disappears from Favoriten Clinic

APA/GEORG HOCHMUTH

At the Favoriten Clinic in Vienna, a baby apparently disappeared on Thursday. The police have so far unsuccessfully conducted a large-scale search for the newborn. The search on-site was suspended overnight, the police reported to the APA. The investigation will continue tomorrow, Friday. The case is now being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department, according to the police.

In the afternoon, the police told the APA that a mother raised the alarm when she returned to her room in the hospital’s neonatology ward and found her one-week-old child missing. Initially, a nurse noticed that the baby was not in the room. She informed the mother, who had briefly left the room, and then the police were notified. Emergency services subsequently secured the hospital premises and searched the entire building for the newborn, including inspecting outgoing vehicles.

There is no substantial evidence so far that the baby was abducted, but this cannot be ruled out either. The parents were being supported by the hospital’s psychologists in the early afternoon while relatives were questioned by the police. How the baby disappeared from the room remains unclear.

WIGEV: No unrestricted access to the ward

In a written statement to ORF’s Wien heute, the Vienna Health Association (WIGEV) emphasized that the ward does not have unrestricted access. The doors are locked, and visitors must ring a doorbell with an intercom system to gain entry. “Access is only granted if it is verifiable that the person has authorization,” WIGEV stated.
