A 60-year-old woman suffered severe injuries after being struck by a train near the Margaretengürtel U4 station in Vienna. The woman was treated at the scene by emergency services before being transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to emergency spokesperson Daniel Melcher. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation.
The incident occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. as the woman stood at the edge of the platform, waiting for the train. She was hit by the incoming train and ended up lying on the platform. The train operator immediately alerted central control, initiating an emergency response. Both Vienna’s public transit authority, Wiener Linien, and the police’s traffic accident unit are investigating. The train driver is receiving support from a crisis intervention team.
Due to the incident, the U4 line was closed between Längenfeldgasse and Kettenbrückengasse until 6:30 p.m., and service resumed with partial closures until it was fully restored just before 7:00 p.m.
This accident follows another tragic event on October 29, when two young “subway surfers” were fatally injured near the Schönbrunn U4 station. On Thursday, authorities confirmed that an 18-year-old had succumbed to his injuries, following the earlier death of his 17-year-old companion. The two were part of a group of four young men who had climbed onto the roof of a U4 train. The deceased were severely injured after colliding with a pedestrian bridge as the train entered Schönbrunn station.
