Austria’s digital vehicle registration certificate can now be shared with others, allowing someone else to legally drive your car. Previously, the certificate could only be used by the vehicle owner. Since its introduction in February 2024, 590,000 people have adopted the digital registration system. To use the new sharing feature, users must have a fully functional ID Austria.

In addition to the ID Austria, users need to install the “eAusweise” app and the “Digitales Amt” app on the same device. Any previously downloaded certificates must be reloaded after the latest app update, which introduces new security features required for sharing registration information.

Users can specify how long the registration certificate is shared, from as little as one day to a maximum of 12 months. However, a shared certificate cannot be shared further by the recipient. Similar to a digital driver’s license, the registration certificate can be presented to law enforcement during traffic checks or shared with others via Bluetooth.

“This update is for situations where people share a car or lend their car to a friend or family member,” explained Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP), Austria’s State Secretary for Digitalization.

Currently, ID Austria has three million active users. Since the launch of the digital driver’s license in October 2022, 654,000 digital licenses have been issued. Meanwhile, 590,000 people are already using the digital vehicle registration certificate.
