England has reached the semifinals of the UEFA Euro in Germany. The “Three Lions” defeated Switzerland 5-3 in a penalty shootout in Düsseldorf on Saturday. Switzerland took the lead in the 75th minute with a goal from Breel Embolo, but Bukayo Saka equalized five minutes later with a solo effort. The match went into extra time, where neither team scored. In the penalty shootout, Pickford saved the first attempt by Manuel Akanji.

This is the third time England has reached the semifinals of a major tournament under coach Gareth Southgate. In the 2018 World Cup, they were eliminated by Croatia, and in the Euro 2020, they lost in the final to Italy on penalties.

England’s defense featured a back-three formation for the first time in Germany, with Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Ezri Konsa. Saka and Kieran Trippier played as wing-backs. Switzerland fielded the same lineup as in their 2-0 win against Italy in the round of 16.

The first half saw little action, with both teams neutralizing each other. England had more possession but created no significant chances. Switzerland became more dangerous after the break, with Embolo’s attempts marking their first significant offensive moves.

Switzerland’s goal came from a cross by Dan Ndoye that Stones failed to clear, allowing Embolo to score from close range. Saka equalized with a stunning shot that hit the post and went in. Extra time had few highlights, with a Declan Rice shot being the closest attempt.

In the shootout, Shaqiri hit the crossbar, and Pickford saved Amdouni’s shot. England’s stars Harry Kane and Phil Foden had already left the field due to exhaustion.
