Fuel prices in Austria have risen sharply at the start of 2025, with the average price for petrol in January reaching €1.571, up by 6.3 cents from December 2024. Diesel saw a similar increase, rising by 6.2 cents to €1.609.
According to the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle, and Touring Club (ÖAMTC), the price hikes are considerably higher than the 3-cent rise that could be justified by the increase in the CO2 levy at the turn of the year.
The ÖAMTC points to the rise in oil prices as the main driver behind the increase. “In particular, mid-January saw the oil price level cause the pump prices to briefly spike to the highest levels of the year, reaching €1.619 for petrol and €1.659 for diesel.”
However, the ÖAMTC notes that by the end of January, prices began to moderate, and since February, fuel has become somewhat cheaper once again. As of 4 February 2025, the median prices are €1.586 for petrol and €1.612 for diesel.
Prices are generally higher in regions such as Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg, where fuel costs exceed the national average.
The ÖAMTC also advises drivers to avoid refuelling at motorway service stations, where prices remain steep. “There, the highest prices rose from €2.099 to €2.129 in mid-January, and unlike average prices, these levels have remained steady at this point,” the club said.
