Demand for subsidies for electric vehicles (EVs) has reached record levels as the support scheme nears its end, amid uncertainty over the future government’s budget plans, according to Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler.

The decision on future funding now lies with the next government, with the ministry stating that recent speculation about subsidy cuts has led to a rise in registrations.

“The switch to climate-friendly mobility is moving forward at record speed,” the ministry said in a statement, urging the incoming administration to ensure adequate funding for electric vehicles and the necessary infrastructure.

The far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) is currently in coalition talks with the People’s Party (ÖVP). Last month, the two parties outlined their planned budget, which includes cuts to several subsidy schemes, including those aimed at environmental protection.

Figures show that the 2024 electric mobility initiative ended with around 25,000 subsidised charging points and 18,000 electric vehicles. In 2020, just 9,000 vehicles and slightly more than 2,000 charging points received support. Over the past five years, nearly 160,000 applications were submitted for subsidies covering electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

Private individuals received funding for around 62,000 electric cars and 51,000 home charging stations. In the business sector, around 53,000 vehicles were subsidised, including 35,000 electric cars.
