Only half of Austrian citizens who are permanent employees will spend a significant portion of their holiday money on vacations this summer, according to a recent survey by consulting firm Deloitte.

The survey, conducted before summer among around 500 people across Austria who receive a 13th salary or holiday pay, revealed a cautious approach to spending. “This summer, Austrians are choosing to save. Only half of them intend to spend a substantial part of their 13th salary,” said Orsolya Hegedüs, partner at Deloitte Austria, in a press release. “One third plans to save and spend the additional money equally.”

Despite signs of easing inflation, the study highlights ongoing economic uncertainties and the heavy burden of costs on households.

Aside from travel (55%), the survey found that holiday pay is also used for everyday essentials such as groceries or household items (26%), as well as larger purchases like cars or furniture (22%). A significant proportion of respondents (19%) also use part of their 13th salary to repay loans.

Earlier this month, a survey by the Austrian Hotel Association found that half of all Austrian citizens are planning to take a domestic holiday this year.
