A man was trapped for hours in a toilet container during the Octoberfest at an amusement park in Austria’s southernmost state of Carinthia before he was finally rescued by emergency services, who had to break down the door.

The St. Veit volunteer fire brigade received a call from the Wiesenmarkt grounds early on Sunday morning, about two and a half hours after the park’s extended closing time.

“We left immediately. When we arrived at Wiesenmarkt, the police had already met us and told us that someone was trapped in a toilet container,” explained Markus Korath, commander of the St. Veit volunteer fire brigade.

The emergency services had to force open the container as they didn’t have a key. The trapped man appeared to be in good spirits. “He must have slept in the toilet container for a few hours. He no longer swayed when he got out and was talking normally,” Korath noted.

Although the town of St. Veit owns the containers, the toilet operator is responsible for checking them. “The toilet operator closes at 3:00 am. Normally, he would have to check every locked toilet. I don’t think this was the case; otherwise, the man wouldn’t have called the police at 5:00 am,” Korath added.

The Wiesenmarkt Octoberfest ran from September 28 and concludes on Monday.
