Spanning over 900 square meters, the new library is the third-largest in Vienna, following the Central Library at Urban-Loritz-Platz and the Philadelphiabrücke Library. Its media collection includes more than 43,000 books, DVDs, Tonies, and more. Music is an essential component of the library experience, and to celebrate its opening in the 10th district, the Mozart Boys’ and Girls’ Choir added a special musical touch.
Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr praised the staff and the library’s new offerings: “This opening is the result of countless hours of hard work and dedication by the library staff – they are the ones who open new worlds for visitors by sharing books. Libraries are more than places for reading – they are third places, open hubs for culture, education, and community. With over 43,000 media items, cutting-edge technology such as 3D printers, and a Green Screen for video productions, the new Neues Landgut library offers a wealth of opportunities, especially for young people. The great anticipation shows: Libraries remain indispensable. In times of fake news and information overload, we need them as reliable sources of knowledge, orientation, and equal opportunity.”
District Head Marcus Franz expressed his excitement about the new resource in his district: “Libraries are places of knowledge, quiet, and concentration, but they are also places where people connect, work creatively on their ideas, and find inspiration. This larger concept, with additional event spaces, free Wi-Fi, a café area, study, and computer stations, has been implemented here. It is designed to engage many different user groups, including the 1,300 students from the new education campus at Neues Landgut and the new residents of the third municipal housing project in Favoriten, the Willi-Resetarits-Hof, where the library is located. I invite all Favoriten residents to take advantage of this fantastic infrastructure, which is open to everyone and freely available to all.”
Space for School Classes, Children’s Groups, and Events
The library is located in the growing district of Neues Landgut at Laxenburger Straße 4, on the ground floor of the new municipal building “Willi Resetarits-Hof,” directly opposite the educational campus. The new location offers a comprehensive range of services for children and adults with over 50 study and reading stations. There is a large, dedicated children’s area, ample space for events, and facilities for school classes and kindergartens. Ten librarians are available to assist visitors.
“A library is an extension of one’s own home. This is exactly what we focused on when designing the new library. Here, you can either study in peace or relax with a newspaper. There are plenty of workstations as well as cozy corners where you can escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a coffee. And for children, there is enough space and variety to truly enjoy the library,” said Bernhard Pöckl, head of Vienna’s Libraries.
3D Printers, Plotters, and Green Screen
At the Neues Landgut library, visitors can find 3D printers, a Green Screen, and a “Library of Things.” “We are particularly excited that we offer more than just books here. We have a dedicated project room that will serve both as a venue for events and as a maker space. We’ve equipped the library with 3D printers, cutting plotters, and a sewing machine, available for workshops and courses. There’s also a Green Screen for small film projects,” said Pöckl.
“Library of Things” – Buy or Borrow?
The library also offers everyday objects for loan. In a dedicated area called the “Library of Things,” visitors can find a variety of essential items that they might not want or be able to purchase themselves: from items that enhance media enjoyment (Toniebox, Sami-Lesebär, LÜK box, Tolino e-reader, Joy-Con steering wheel, PlayStation controller, boombox, turntable…) to creative, learning, and movement games (e.g., sound marble run, sensory puzzles, balance board, Kendama, juggling set, chess set, bead weaving loom, 3D pen…) and practical household helpers (window vacuum, extension cord reel, vacuum sealer, spiral binding machine, laser distance meter, spirit level, labeling device, sled, hole punch, energy meter…). All of these items can be borrowed easily with a library card.
Continuous Opening Hours from 11 AM to 7 PM and Open Library
The Neues Landgut library is open Monday to Friday from 11 AM to 7 PM. Thanks to the Open Library system, the library can also be accessed outside of regular hours, from 10 AM to 10 PM. The location is easily accessible by tram, bus, and suburban train, situated near the main train station.

Opening Exhibition and “Lesofantenfest” at Neues Landgut
The new library is already hosting events starting with its opening. In the café area, Marija ©abanović & Arman Aghayan present their photo exhibition “Wen juckt das?” (Who Cares?). The artists photographed young men of migrant background in Vienna and interviewed them about their lives. “Wen Juckt Das?” emerged from the desire to learn about their daily lives, hopes, and challenges. In the summer of 2023, they sought participants in parks, youth centers, and public training areas, encountering a wide range of emotions – from boredom and anxiety about the future to laughter and care. “Drawing from our own experiences of discrimination, we approached them with empathy and allowed their realities to shape our project,” said ©abanović and Aghayan. On March 5, 2025, the Lesofantenfest will be held at Neues Landgut for the first time, featuring Ruth Grützbauch and Dorothea Kuchinka’s Public Space Pop-Up Planetarium. For the youngest visitors, the program “Kirangolini” offers a first encounter with picture books, music, and play.
Free Library Card for Children and Youth Up to 18 Years
The 37 libraries across Vienna offer a wide range of borrowable materials. Two locations are in the 10th district. Library cards are free for those under 18, after which they cost €36 annually (without discounts). In 2024, the libraries recorded 6.4 million loans and served 162,700 users.
The collection includes 1.4 million books, films, and music, as well as 50,000 CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and console games. With a library card, newspapers, magazines, and 90,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks are also available online for free.
Numerous events for all age groups, including readings, concerts, German courses, and film screenings, enrich the library’s offerings. Additionally, the City of Vienna Libraries podcast #büchereicast is available for listeners.
