In 2024, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) surpassed a major milestone, transporting over half a billion passengers for the first time. A total of 511.3 million passengers traveled on ÖBB trains and buses last year, the company announced on Friday. The pre-tax result (EBT) increased by 2 million, reaching 113.6 million euros.

“2024 was a year filled with challenges – such as the once-in-a-century flood. But it was also a year of achievements,” stated ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä in the company’s press release. In total, 172.8 million train kilometers were covered, which represents a 4.2% increase compared to the previous year, 2023. The total number of passengers grew by 17.7 million, or 3.6%. This increase is largely attributed to a 9.8% rise in commuter traffic.
