More than 200 firearms were found at the home of an 85-year-old man in Vienna-Liesing on Wednesday afternoon. According to the Vienna Police Department, the massive weapons arsenal was discovered after a routine visit by a mobile care team. The man reportedly suddenly reached for a knife, prompting the caregivers to flee the house and call emergency services around 1:30 p.m., according to a spokesperson.
During the subsequent inspection, the officers found not only around 200 long guns but also several pistols, swords, ammunition, and black powder. The entire collection was seized by the authorities. “He had some firearms with legal documentation,” a spokesperson said. “However, some of the weapons were not properly secured.” The exact nature of the weapons is still under investigation, as is the question of the man’s motives and the broader context.
A temporary firearms ban has been imposed on the 85-year-old Austrian, and an investigation into suspected coercion is underway.
